The Mary Kay Glam Vox Box

I joined an online review community called Influenster awhile back.  Last week I received my third Vox Box which is a free box full of free goodies that they ask me to review.  I am not paid for this, but I do get goodies for free.  All they ask is for me to give them unbiased reviews.

I’m good at that.

This time I received the Mary Kay Glam Vox Box.  Which I was really excited about for a couple of reasons.

One: I love makeup.

Two: Even better than makeup?  FREE makeup.

I don’t use Mary Kay often.  In the past I have purchased a few things but, quite frankly, I hate going to parties for multilevel marketing businesses because I feel like I’m always getting bullied into buying things.  We’ve all been there.  “Ok, I want you to make a list of all the things you would buy RIGHT now if money was no object!” then you go into the room with the consultant and she’s like “Ok, let’s get you everything on that list.  It’s not that expensive!” and $300 later….

You get the picture.

I’m sure ALL Mary Kay reps aren’t like that but the only two parties I have ever been to have been JUST like that.  Know what I put on my list at the second party?

One eyeshadow.

Know why?  Because at the first party I was taken for like $300 (ok, probably not that much but it was a huge chunk of change).

Anyway, I’m totally off subject.  This time I got FREE goodies.  This is what my box looked like when I opened it:

Ignore my instagram screen grab – I accidentally deleted the pic from my phone.  Also included was this card which gave me the info about exactly what was in the box:

This card is great because I have no clue what the names of half this stuff is.  So here we go.  My unbiased unpaid opinion on the Mary Kay makeup I received.

Let’s talk about the brushes first.  I received two brushes.  One Cream eye color/concealer brush which retails for $10 and one powder brush which isn’t shown on the card so I have no idea how much it retails for.

The thing about makeup brushes is you can NEVER have too many high quality brushes.  And, to be honest, if I only buy one thing ever from Mary Kay it will be the brushes.  I used to buy a brush set from them every year.  My most recent set I purchased from Sephora and it’s nice, but there’s something about Mary Kay brushes.  You can’t go wrong.

Next is the Mary Kay Lash Love Mascara in I ❤ Black.  Retail price $15.  Not bad for mascara.  Except I cannot figure out how to keep it from clumping.  It says it delivers four times the volume but, quite frankly, when that volume occurs because your lashes are sticking together, it’s not a good sign.  I’ll use this tube because I can unclump my lashes by using my lash brush, but I probably wouldn’t choose to buy it over my normal mascara.

Then we have the Mary Kay Cream Eye Color in Apricot Twist.  Retail price $14.  I cannot say this enough.  I LOVE this eye color.  I’ll say it again. I LOOOOVE this eye color.  I love cream eye shadows anyway but this one is the perfect shade for me.  Once I run out of this, I think I will buy more.

The Mary Kay Mineral Cheek Color Shy Blush, which retails for $12, is a “stay true color that defines cheekbones.”  I’ll be honest.  I am NOT good at putting on blush.  I do it.  But not well.  This blush is ok.  It goes on, it’s not bright pink or orange or any color that makes me look weird.  I’ll use it.  I won’t buy it again though.  I also realize that things like this are made for the Mary Kay compact you can purchase but I don’t have one so the packaging is just a little weird to me.  The blush keeps falling out of the holder and that’s annoying.

The Mary Kay Translucent Loose Powder, retail for $16 is up next.  I’m a lover of loose powder.  This loose powder is not translucent though.  It’s ghost white.  What happens when a pale person puts on super pale powder?  I’ll give you a hint.  “Hi, I’m Casper the friendly ghost.”  I’ve been mixing it with my normal loose powder and it’s working well.  But I can’t just use a super white powder on it’s own.

The lip gloss.  Oh, how I love the Nourishine Plus Lip Gloss in Mango Tango (retail $14).  I do not wear lipstick.  I have small lips and I end up looking like a clown when I put on most lipsticks.  But this gloss is amazing.  Just enough color to define my lips without the cakey look of most lipsticks.

The Mary Kay Bronzing Powder (retail $18) is a great bronzer.  I like it.  I’ll use this one up and I might buy some more in the future.  My only complaint is that for $18 there simply isn’t that much in the packet.

Finally, we have the Gel Eyeliner with expandable brush applicator in Jet Black.  This retails for $18.  I have had a HORRIBLE time using this eyeliner.  I don’t know if it’s me or what, but it goes on so thick I feel like a raccoon.  So then I have to get out the qtips and tone it down and then redo my foundation under my eyes.  I’ve been using it for almost a week now and I think I am slowly getting better at it but it’s not easy to use.  I do wish I had a Mary Kay rep to show me the proper way to use this eyeliner because I feel like if I COULD use it right, it would be great.

However, that being said, everyone has complimented me on my eyeliner the past few days.  So it MUST look better than I think it does.

I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes.  And I’m glad I did.  I think I’ve found some great new makeup items that I will use in the future.  I just hope I can figure out this eyeliner before I use the whole container!
